NEW SOLUTION TO THE LOSS OF GARDENERS' FAVOURITE
02 July 2010
With just a few more months to go until Dithane fungicide has to be removed from retailers’ shelves – the Pesticides Safety Directorate has set the deadline of 31 December 2010 – consumers need an alternative for tackling fungal diseases such as blight on tomatoes and potatoes. Drawing on its technical expertise, Bayer Garden has already stepped into help.
Fruit & Vegetable Disease Control, the active ingredient of which is copper oxychloride, is the ideal alternative to Dithane fungicide and it is available now.
Speaking about the change Bayer Garden product manager, Alison Mulvaney said Dithane is the latest in a long line of products that is being withdrawn from the market.
“The use of these products is not thought to pose any problems; it is simply that securing the re-accreditation required by the Pesticides Safety Directorate is complex, time consuming and expensive. The consequence is that most companies chose not to secure re-approval for small scale use, so gardeners are left without access to their tried and tested solutions. We always aim to help, investing in the introduction of new products as quickly as possible so consumers can transition to them at their own pace.”
Fruit & Vegetable Disease Control is effective against a wide range of plant diseases, including blight on potatoes and outdoor tomatoes. It treats peach leaf curl, canker on apples and pears, bacterial canker on cherries and plums and can be used for damping off problems on the seedlings of edible and ornamental garden plants.
