DESERT’ED AT THE NEC…

ITV1’s This Morning gardening guru, David Domoney, is joining forces once again with Bayer Garden to develop a show garden at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live, featuring a range of nature’s hardiest plants that can survive even the most neglectful of garden waterers!
The Bayer Garden - Situs Hortus (which effectively means drought garden) features some of the world’s toughest plants from hostile desert-like regions where conditions are intolerable for many plant types. Some of the varieties on display could survive for up to a year without a drop of water!
David believes that in these times of climate change there are a host of plants gardeners of the future may turn to that have the ability to survive drought conditions. He aims to demonstrate how nature has cleverly adapted plants to cope with extreme growing environments since time began and will continue to do so.
The garden - imaginatively created beside a presumed caravan, behind an isolated gas station on a lone desert highway – features cacti and succulents like Agaves, Aloe Vera and Crassula, which are some of Britain’s favourite houseplants.
David says, “I hope this unusual garden will inspire the public and maybe renew people’s interest in these plants, whose unusual shapes are often a favourite with children. The sheer size of some of plants on display, for example Cactus Euphorbia, which is the height of a truck, and Agave, which is as big as a small car - are bound to draw attention to the garden. Although planted especially for the show, the entire garden will look like it’s been there for years!”
This garden project is the second for Bayer Garden this year in association with David Domoney. Tommy Gill, Head of Bayer Garden UK, says, “We are delighted to be working with David again. His inspirational approach and innovative ideas reflect our business objectives. Bayer is working on technologies to minimize the effects of climate change and on projects for managing the impact it has on our daily lives, including the development of crops that can thrive in arid conditions. The Bayer Garden – Situs Hortus shows how even domestic gardens may need to alter in the light of potential climate change.”
BBC Gardeners’ World Live runs from 11 to 15 June at the NEC in Birmingham. See ‘The Bayer Garden - Situs Hortus’ on stand number GA3.
