Woolly Aphid

During late spring Woolly Aphid can be seen around old prune sites and splits in older bark.  Also seen on the lower surface of leaves, along the main vein.  Later in the season these aphids move to young branches where they feed causing soft, knobbly swelling to develop.  These swollen galls are prone to splitting in frosty conditions creating open wounds where fungal diseases can enter the plant ie Apple Canker.

A very difficult pest to control especially if the problem has been left unchecked.  Consider using a plant oil based winter wash to control the over wintering nymphs.
