Sooty mould is often a black or greyish-green fungus that grows on the upper surface of leaves and other surfaces that have an accumulation of honeydew on them. Various sap feeding insects ie aphids, whiteflies, scale insects and leaf suckers excrete a sticky substance known as honeydew (plant sap). Heavy coatings of black sooty mould which grows on honeydew coated leaves can not only spoil a plants appearance but it can reduce the amount of light and air reaching the foliage. Treat the cause, not the symptom. Identify the insect pest and treat with an appropriate insecticide for the affected plant/pest (edible or ornamental plants).
