Slugs and snails

These are always in the top garden pests in the UK.  Feeding damage appears as irregular holes in leaves and tell tale slime trails can be seen on the soil surface. They feed on vertially all plant material including seedlings, bedding plants, clematis, fruit and vegetable plants particularly when young with soft growth.  Significant problem where weather is warm, damp and humid.  Often not seen during the day, tendending to feed in the evening.  Present all year - less of a problem in hot dry and very cold weather.

Product Solution: Scatter Slug and Snail Killer, Slug Bait  thinly around plants you want to protect. Read pack instructions before use.

Cultural measures: Keep areas around susceptible plants clean and well cultivated.  Smear pots and containers with Vaseline, attach copper ribbon to the top of pots and containers, apply crushed egg shells or fine horticultural grit / fine gravel to the top compost surface of pots to help protect vulnerable plants.
