Nitrogen deficiency


Leaves appear small and chlorotic yellowing), general growth is reduced.  Red/purple spotting sometimes develop on the leaves as pigment levels drop.  Older, lower leaves are affected first but when the deficiency continues all parts of the plant can be similarly affected.  Premature leaf drop can occur.  Flower production can also be reduced.  Nitrogen deficiency can develop in any soils, particularly light soil low in organic matter, or if the soil has been heavily cropped.

Consider growing legumes which are plants capable of fixing nitrogen in the soil.
