Greenfly/blackfly (aphids)

Greenfly, in particular, and blackflies are the most common and serious of all rose pests.  Clusters of these aphids can be seen feeding on the sap of tender young shoots from the early spring if the weather is mild.  Feeding causes the leaves to become distorted and puckered.   Extensive feeding from infestations of aphids can severelty reduce the plants vigour, making the plant more susceptible to other problems.  As a direct result of aphids feeding, the plants sap (honeydew) drips onto foliage below the feeding site.  Sooty mould grows on this sticky honeydew.
