Bolt

Bolting of lettuce is seen when the plants grow rapidly and go to flower instead of producing edible leaves or other edible plant parts.  Bolting is often a result of extreme environmental conditions such as periods of draught, dry soils, growing in full sun during hot summers.  Lettuce and other salad type veg ie pak choi and  rocket can be susceptible to bolting.

Cultural methods: Sow bolt-resistant varieties and keep the soil moist.  Raise plants in the greenhouse and plant out when the temperatures are warmer, or sow directly under cloches or fleece to provide additional warmth.
